Samuel Powers

As a throwback to a decade full of their most beloved sitcoms, (where the quintet derived the content for their music) Samuel Powers is a band living in the 90's. The group formed in 2013 to self release their first EP "The Bayside Tigers," a basement-rock soap opera about characters from the TV show "Saved by the Bell." Shortly after they went back into the studio to record their newest EP "Empty Halls, Future Friends," a five song coming of age story drawn from the episodes of the heart-wrenching "Boy Meets World." But if reliving moments from your favorite childhood television programs isn't enough, Sam Pow brings an emotional and fun live performance that will take you back to your youth.

NOWNS

Dude, holy shit... they found it! I can’t believe it but they actually found it. You know those kids up the street? The ones that are always skating their kicker and smoking cigs out in front of their mom’s house? The ones that have been trying to rebuild the same dirt bike since junior high? You know, the ones who sold me that fake hash that was really just melted incense? Well, they did it. Those weird, sketchy little fuckers found it. They found that one summer day when all of our friends were together, and we were all happy, and we were all high. And we were all in the back of a dead pick-up truck, and we were cussing and we were yelling and we were having ourselves a good old-fashioned goof-off. And we were crazy in love with each other and with ourselves. And we were very much aware that one day we would all be dead and gone, and that was somehow the most beautiful part of this whole fucking “life” kick. What I’m trying to tell you is these kids found our greatest day. They found it, and they caught it for us. And now we can go back there whenever we want. And I guess, in that way, our summers and our lovers and our lives will never fully die off. And we can all be together again. And we can all be happy again. And we can all live forever. All we need is a tape player.

DJ Two Teks (Bang Bang)

AJ Naylor, also known as “DJ Two Teks” I Started DJIN in 1993 with my best friend Shannon who bought a pair of turntables and a mixer from a auction. We sat it up in his bedroom where we started to teach ourselves how to DJ and we became addicted to learning how to become DJ’s. A few years later I bought my own tables and mixer . Just like most DJ’s I started out in my bedroom with just a handful of records that I got from my uncle and other family members. I practiced every day for hours on end; scratching, mixing and beat juggling trying to be like some of the DJ’s I grew up listening to.

Moving forward. I started DJIN in night clubs in the late 90’ early 2000’s from Frederick MD to DC and Baltimore. In 2004 I attended Scratch DJ Academy in NYC and while attending I started teaching beginners lessons at Scratch DJ Academy. A few years later I found myself teaching at the Frederick Rock School.

In 2008 I started a party called BANGBANG at Cafe Nola in Frederick MD, it was the first true dance party in Frederick. I would play all music genres for the perfect sound. The party grew across the DMV and had DJ’s from all over attend. It’s 2018 and it’s still Frederick’ s number one dance party.

Mr. Husband is the songwriting and comedy persona of Kenny Tompkins.  He is best known as co-founder of noteworthy indie-upstart Yellow K Records who released one of 2016's most critically acclaimed albums "Psychopomp" by Japanese Breakfast.   In his live band Tompkins is joined by Chris Morris of Cotton Jones on drums and Jasen Reeder of Page France on bass. The group is quickly making a name for itself with their unique live show which mixes in small doses of comedy, theatrics, and faux-self-help all centered around extremely well crafted songs.   Mr. Husband is currently on tour in support of their debut  "Plaid on Plaid" which was released on May 5th, 2017 via Yellow K Records.

Middle Kid:

Middle Kid began as the acoustic solo project of Zack Willis. Using the project as an outlet for his indulgent, self-aware lyrics and catchy melodies, he recorded his debut EP “Whiner” in March 2015 in his mom’s kitchen. Since then, he has readapted his songs from acoustic to electric in an attempt to create a more ethereal sound, but with crushing waves of dynamic shifts. Now, Middle Kid is the full band project of Zack (Guitar/Vocals), Evan Braswell (Bass), and Matt Henry (Drums), reminiscent of bands like Foxing, Cursive, and Mansions.

Among The Willows & Plaid The Buffalo

Plaid The Buffalo, otherwise  known as JB Dunn of the Mid-Atlantic bands Secondhand Ramblers and Israel Creek, is somewhere between alt-country and neo-folk, but doesn't take himself seriously enough to claim either of those titles. With a whiskey soaked baritone and a parlor guitar, his ultimate goal is to be the first trubadour to headline the bottom if the ocean.

Megan Jean & The KFB (A Voice Like The Devil Herself)

Hard-touring, foot-stompin', guitar beatin, upright lickin, washboard scratchin,' banjo pickin' madness with a voice like the devil herself.

Megan Jean and the KFB, or Klay Family Band, arrange a demented blend of americana, punk, dance, and the avant-garde that they’ve taken to describing as, “a metal band, if it was 1927.”

Inventive percussion, electrified banjo, and a voice like the Devil Herself have earned Megan Jean and the KFB a dedicated following all over the East Coast. Calling the road home on a “never-ending tour,” this transient married duo has taken their nomadic musical lifestyle and transformed it into a kind of Voodoo that unites scenes, fans, and musical styles. This is a band that lives to perform, and is fueled by sheer guts and know how.

Marshal Fuzz

Marshal Fuzz, an original DC based rock band that evokes the fuzzy blues rock tradition of classic rock bands such as Black Sabbath, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream. Their sound has been described as a mesh of Black Sabbath and Muddy Waters. With Sulaiman Rahman on guitar and vocals, Vince Vezzi on bass, and Nick Rodousakis on drums they combine aggressive guitar riffs, extended live jams, soulful vocals and a tight rhythm section to capture the classic power trio sound with an original contemporary twist. What a rock band should be!! Formed in 2014, they spent most of the year in the studio writing material and developing their sound. They emerged out of rehearsals to begin tearing up the DC/MD/VA Mid-Atlantic scene, establishing themselves as THE force to be reckoned with on any stage.

Shadow Apparatus Were a 3-piece band from Frederick md mixing grunge punk and indie rock to bangerang to.

Hot Sauce Night W/ Broho Sauce Co.

BroHo Sauce Co.
Once every thousand years when the planets align, and Zeus wishes upon a shooting star, two children are born to alter existence as we know it. Long prophesied by the One-Eyed Witch and the Three-Legged Wizard in the Quagmire of Dreams, two children finally appeared. They were destined to be brothers…Call it fate, or the fact that they have the same parents, the day they manifested into physical form, the quest began. Speech was not yet an option, so they relied on simple hand gestures to communicate their ideas of great sauces to save the world. These chosen ones were unlike common mortals; Vinegar, Peppers, Salt, Sass, Power, and Gumption flow through their veins. Gifted by the gods and blessed by sages, they are destined to change the sauce world forever.

Cafe Nola will be holding a hot sauce night featuring BroHo Sauce Co. pairing a select menu with cocktails. Prepare your taste buds for a night of fiery flavors.

Hot Sauce Menu:
Buffalo Cauliflower- Roasted Cauliflower, Groho hot sauce, ranch, blue cheese crumbs, pickled celery
Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos- Shredded chicken, spicy cream cheese, balsamic glaze
Chicken Biscuits- Fried chicken, pepper jack, spicy aioli, hot honey glaze
Curry Wings- 6 wings with curry hot sauce
Fried Pickles- Lemon Pepper, panko breading, spicy aioli

Dumb Valley W/ Beatnik Termites

Dumb Valley will be releasing their first EP coinciding with their first live performance with the help of the Beatnik Termites with their triumphant return to Frederick.

Beatnik Termites
In 1987, a couple of college students in Cleveland, Ohio, inspired by punk bands who couldn't even play their instruments, formed a band with an undertaking to counter this trend and play punk music of first-rate quality: well written songs, well played -- plain and simple. To do so, they reached back in recent history to styles of music that everyone loves: Doo-wop, Surf, Girl Groups, Brill Building/Tin Pan Alley -- all of this, American music. The band's first song "Strawberry Girl" was written, and the Beatnik Termites were formed; a trio, making a new American music.

Crooked Hills

Crooked Hills

Crooked Hills is a hard-charging thunderhorse of a rock band hailing from Frederick MD and the surrounding foothills of the Appalachian mountains.

Crooked Hills is known for their energetic live show and a sound saturated with massive riffs and lyrics inspired by the rich dark history of the area.

Crooked Hills plays a style of heavy music with elements pulled from metal and hardcore, but also equally infused with classic rock swagger and bluesy southern grooves. A tight and driving rhythm section foundation supports wailing guitar leads and screaming vocals.

Crooked Hills has played numerous venues in the Maryland and Virginia area since coming together in 2015. Recent line-up additions have enhanced and solidified the granite monolith that is the Crooked Hills sound.

Crooked Hills released and on-line 3 song EP at the beginning of 2017 and is currently in-studio finishing a full-length to be released later this year.

Emo Night W/ Blue Heaven

Emo Night W/ Blue Heaven

February 7th we’re getting real sad and emo at Cafe Nola. Come in dressed as your 14 year old self and take advantage of our drink specials.

Blue Heaven is what you would probably, most likely call a band. They basically play music. Very goodly I might add. 12/10 would recommend.
Blue Heaven is an indie pop band from Frederick, MD. From an interview with their drummer Matt Full: "When we first started the project we kept using the term “Dream Pop”. We wanted to write music with a specific alternative vibe in mind. We didn’t want to write mainstream pop music, and we also didn’t want to write specifically Indie Rock. We wanted to land right in the sweet spot between the two and write music that had the alternative influenced with the polished sound of pop. This is something The Cure accomplished long ago. They are a big inspiration to us."

Mad Meg//The Escape Artist//COFR

Mad Meg is a New York based band which proclaims its style as “Punk Chanson Noir.” Having originally debuted in 2011, Mad Mag’s eclectic sound is colored by the ethnic and music backgrounds of its past and present members who come from Russia, USA, Mexico, Austria, France, Puerto Rico and Kazakhstan. Their musical backgrounds range from jazz to mariachi music, from rock to Russian urban folk, from punk to cabaret. The band’s songs, haunting and neurotic, possess a fair amount of debauchery, tragicomedy, and nostalgia. Dark and awkward lyrics paint a disturbing picture of a daily life of a lone urban-dweller set to the background of upbeat minor key melodies.

The Escape Artist is a Dream/Shoegaze/Post-Rock band from Washington, D.C. Made up of layered guitars, ethereal vocals and a steady driving rhythm section, their sound has been compared to "tunnels of light flowing through astral planes." The Escape Artist has been playing and recording for over a decade and continues to create musical soundscapes that are mysterious, enchanting, beautiful, and sometimes dark. Songs evoke images of tiny bioluminescent creatures floating in the deep abyss.

COFR is drum and keys music from Jason Cohen and Chris Frick

DJ Two Teks (Bang Bang)

Immersed in the hip hop subculture of the 1980s, AJ Naylor a.k.a. DJ
TwoTeks taught himself how to cut and scratch on Technics 1200s by
mimicking the sounds of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Eric B, and Jam Master Jay.
From there, he studied VHS tapes by the Invisible Scratch Pickles, DJ
Qbert, and DMC World DJ Championships competitions to refine his beat
juggling skills.

In the 1990s, he was featured on rap albums of local artists in
Frederick, MD, and released a series of mixtapes. In 2002, DJ TwoTeks
attended class at Scratch DJ Academy in New York City, NY and further
honed his skillset by studying under DJ I.Emerge, DJ Evil Dee, Rob
Swift, Mista Sinista, and Neil Armstrong. He started out as a battle
DJ, and has been scratching and beat juggling for the majority of his
career.

DJ TwoTeks does limit himself to any particular genre of sub-genre of
music, which is evident his sets and digital music collection. He has
DJ'd at venues in San Diego, CA; Washington, DC; Frederick and
Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; and New York City, NY alongside DJ Craze,
DJ Qbert, Biz Markie and Sharkey. Currently, he is the resident DJ of
a monthly party held in downtown Frederick.
